MY STORY

Creating relationships has always come naturally to me. But knowing what to do when my wife said, “We need to talk”?
That was another story.

Like a lot of men, I was taught to avoid conflict and keep the peace. I’d nod, say, “Okay, you’re right. I’m sorry,” and hope the tension would go away. That’s just what men do, right?

No, because that’s not real partnership.

Modern relationships need more than passive apologies.
They require men to understand their emotions so that they can communicate honestly. But as a cisgendered white male, my model of masculinity didn't include emotional fluency.

Thankfully, I have a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.
And so does my wife.
But even with all that training, navigating conflict in my relationship took resilience and a lot of work. Over time, I learned to recognize my emotions, stop my automatic reactions and change the unhelpful patterns I used to fall into.

Vulnerability is weakness?
Whoever said that has no idea the strength it takes to feel feelings and talk about them. Doing this relational work took more courage and determination than being a college athlete.
And it was the most life-changing decision I’ve ever made.
